The man who killed four people in a Manhattan building on Monday, Shane Tamura, purchased the gun he used from his boss at the Horseshoe casino resort in Las Vegas. On Wednesday, New York police said as much.
The AR-15-style rifle that Tamura sold to him for $1,400 was lawfully bought by his supervisor in the casino's surveillance division, according to the police. However, it wasn't immediately apparent if selling the murder weapon again was illegal.
The supervisor, who remained anonymous, has not yet been charged with one.
In addition, the manager sold Tamura the BMW that the 27-year-old used to carry out the atrocity across the nation. According to authorities, a revolver discovered in the vehicle was lawfully acquired in a different transaction on June 12 in Nevada. Tamura's conceal-carry permit was granted for the revolver, not the rifle.
After shooting three people dead in the lobby of the NFL's offices at 345 Park Ave., Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd story, where he killed another person before taking his own life.
Tamura claimed to have CTE in a note discovered in his wallet, and he accused the NFL of concealing the risks associated with brain damage sustained in contact sports.
According to the police, the note also included an apology to his supervisor at Horseshoe.
Tamura had a history of mental illness that was documented. When New York police searched his Las Vegas residence, they found 100 rounds for the revolver, one rifle round, anti-psychotic, anti-epileptic, and anti-inflammatory medications, as well as a suicide note in which he apologized to his mother.
“I love you Momma, I’m sorry,” the note read, according to police.
Tamura was taken into custody at Red Rock Casino Resort in September 2023 on a misdemeanor trespassing allegation. After being arrested by police for making a disturbance, Tamura refused to leave the property, which is situated in the Summerlin suburb of Las Vegas. Without presenting his identification, he had demanded $5,000 from a cage cashier that he had just won.
The New York police contingent was still in Las Vegas as of Wednesday, where they secured a search warrant for Tamura's Horseshoe locker.
